1:1 Mentoring & Signature Events Program
The Girl Talk 1:1 Mentoring & Signature Events Program serves Knox County girls in 6th through 12th grades. Through an in-depth and uniquely designed matching process, each girl is paired with a caring adult, female mentor who will give her the additional support she needs to get through life’s challenges and transitions. In addition to this mentoring relationship, girls enrolled in the 1:1 Mentoring and Signature Events Program could participate in all Girl Talk activities and outings that are designed to foster closer relationships with their peers and mentors, address mental health concerns, and consist of mentoring activities such as sleepovers, retreats, college & career tours, etc.
The Girl Talk Life Prep Academy
The Girl Talk Life Prep Academy will prepare high school girls for college, career, and/or life, through consecutive weekly sessions, each semester. The curriculum consists of topics such as: College and Career exploration and preparation, credit & money management, the importance of budgeting, accessing financial aid & reducing the need for student loans, transitioning into becoming an adult, becoming a financially stable adult, applying for housing and transportation, obtaining, and maintaining a job, and much more. Juniors and Seniors will also have the chance to compete to participate in an 8-week Summer internship to further prepare them for the workforce.
Girl Talk School-Based Program
The Girl Talk School-Based Program collaborates with Knox Education Foundation Community Schools Initiative, other various community partners, and a group of dedicated volunteer mentors to facilitate after-school groups for girls in 4th-8th grades. Each of these 10-weekly curriculum-based learning sessions walk girls through exercises and activities designed to build self-esteem and self-confidence, prevent teen pregnancy, and increase the likelihood of educational advancement. Currently available at 15 Knox County Elementary and Middle School sites and 2 community-based sites, the Girl Talk School-Based Program allows girls the chance to connect with their peers and caring adult mentors, offers tools for academic achievement and success, and college and career learning opportunities.
“Girl Talk is an organization that focuses on empowering girls to become their best selves, and we do that by reducing the likelihood of teen pregnancy and helping them to advance educationally.”
