Organized Labor

United Way and the “Live United “slogans are in harmony with that of our union brothers and sisters. The American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organization (AFL-CIO) and the United Way have enjoyed a cooperative relationship since 1946. Our strong partnerships between management and labor have a positive and powerful impact on giving to the United Way of Greater Knoxville and United Ways in all of its surrounding counties. Labor representatives serve in many key leadership roles within United Way. They serve on our board of directors, campaign cabinet, allocation and several other committees. This partnership where labor, management and United Way work together on a common cause keep labor motivated.

Labor’s mission is to build a stronger Community by uniting workers in making a personal investment of time and resources in their communities through United Way. Our goals include involving members in United Way employee campaigns at all levels. Labor trains union members and others to assist co-workers with information about available services and to refer them to the appropriate partner agencies and organizations. We engage our membership to become active in the community through volunteerism and leadership. We recognize and thank labor members who have performed outstanding United Way volunteer service.

The AFL-CIO Community Services Labor Liaison of the United Way of Greater Knoxville and the Knoxville-Oak Ridge Area Central Labor Council develop annual programmatic objectives and goals to help ensure that a strong partnership continues to grow and remain relevant.
