March 4-11 individuals, programs and organizations honor and celebrate the contributions that 80,000 Americans make to their communities and the service of more than 1 million AmeriCorps alumni. AmeriCorps Week is a time to salute AmeriCorps members and alums for their service, thank AmeriCorps community partners, and communicate AmeriCorps impact on communities and on the lives of those who serve.
United Way of Greater Knoxville has a valuable relationship with the national Afterschool Alliance, which is supporting three one-year successive VISTA placements. Recent University of Tennessee, Knoxville graduate Ronni Nelson is a first-year VISTA. She is taking a year break in her Criminal Justice studies to identify resources that are significant in responding to the Obama Administration’s My Brother’s Keeper initiative. The VISTAs of years two and three will then identify appropriate activities and engagements to address the specific target indicator chosen in Knoxville: Impacting the reading proficiency of 3rd grade boys of color.
